We are please to announce the launch of the Journal of Hadīth and Sīra Studies.  Hadīth and Sīra Studies is a peer-reviewed academic journal. It is concerned with all aspects of classical and contemporary hadīth and sīra research. It welcomes multidisciplinary contributions to hadīth and sīra studies especially from literature, history, sociology, psychology, and educational sciences as well as other branches of Islamic studies. Children and War: Past and Present

Third international multidisciplinary conference to be held at the University of Salzburg, Austria, on 13-15 July 2016

Organized by the University of Salzburg and the University of Wolverhampton, in association with the UN Office of the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Children and Armed Conflict.

The Qur’an: Text, Society And Culture’ Conference Thursday 11 – Saturday 13 February 2016 SOAS, University of London

Convenors: Prof. M.A.S. Abdel Haleem and Dr Helen Blatherwick

Proposals are invited for the Ninth SOAS Conference on the Qur’an, to be held from Thursday 11 to Saturday 13 February 2016. The conference series seeks to provide a forum for investigating the basic question: how is the Qur’anic text read and interpreted? Our objective is to encompass a global vision of current research trends, and to stimulate discussion, debate and research on all aspects of the Qur’anic text and its interpretation and translation.

While the conference will remain committed to the textual study of the Qur’an and the religious, intellectual and artistic activity that developed around it and drew on it, contributions on all topics relevant to Qur’anic studies are welcomed and attention will also be given to literary, cultural, politico-sociological and anthropological studies relating to the Qur’an. The final conference programme will take account of the range of proposals actually accepted.

Selected papers will be published as articles in the Journal of Qur’anic Studies, subject to standard outside refereeing. Speakers are expected to give priority to JQS when publishing these articles.

XIII conference of the Italian Society for Middle Eastern Studies (SeSaMO)

Since the Arab uprisings of 2010/2011, the MENA (Middle East and North Africa) region has not stopped of being the focus of media and scholarly attention. The uprisings have brought about major transformations and called into question the Westphalian national state order in the region. The emergence of the Islamic State as an anti-systemic force has strengthened this reality, while re-surfacing Kurdish nationalism and escalating sectarian conflicts have added momentum to the fragmentation and re-composition of the regional order. Workshop: Critical Perspectives on Human Rights

Workshop convenor: Dr Birgit Schippers (St Mary’s University College Belfast)

Recent work in political theory, in critical legal theory, and in history has challenged human rights’ purported regulatory, disciplinary and exclusionary effects; further, it has highlighted the anthroprocentric assumptions underpinning rights discourse, and it has questioned the alleged privileging of juridical procedures, criticising human rights’ predilection for ‘jurocratic rule’ (Honig) at the expense of democratic practices. In response to these challenges, critical human rights scholarship draws on agonistic, aporetic and performative readings of human rights, and it seeks to excavate those discursive conditions that constitute the human as a bearer of rights. بیشتر بخوانید

The Summer Academy is organized in the framework of the project ZUKUNFTSPHILOLOGIE: REVISITING THE CANONS OF TEXTUAL SCHOLARSHIP and addresses postdoctoral researchers and advanced doctoral students from the field of language studies, history and cultural studies. The journal Memoria y Civilización, published by the Department of History of the University of Navarra (Spain), is preparing an issue to be published in December 2015 on: Muslim Views of the West.
For several decades, historians and other social scientists have addressed the question of how the West had seen the future of the Islamic world, with its errors, distortions and stereotypes. This was evident again after the attack of 11-S in New York and, more recently, during the events arising from the so-called “Arab Spring”, especially in countries of North Africa and the Middle East. However, in this issue is intended to analyse the question of how an image of the West has been built over the centuries in the Muslim world with, probably, similar distortions and stereotypes. University of Chicago Shiʿi Studies Symposium: “The Practical Authority of the Imams and their Representatives”

Date of Symposium: April 3rd-4th, 2015

The theoretical authority of the Imam in Shiʿism has been addressed as a question of intellectual history by numerous articles and monographs over the course of the last century. Polemics over the nature of the Imamate provide rich sources for such questions, leading back to the very earliest years of Islam. However, it remains far more difficult to study the question of the practical efficacy of the Imam’s authority, and those who wielded it in his name. This symposium seeks to draw together research that addresses both the intellectual conceptualization of authority with the question of the practical authority of the Imam and his various representatives. We welcome contributions from scholars working from any relevant scholarly perspective, including social, intellectual and political history, anthropology, political science, literature, and religious studies. بیشتر بخوانید
