Journal of Islamic Perspective and Culture is a refereed journal dedicated to publishes high quality, peer-reviewed multidisciplinary scholarly articles on all aspects of related to Islam and Muslim societies offered in a variety of other disciplines as well, such as culture, history, geography, art, law, anthropology, political science, philosophy, literature, sociology, economics, and women, gender and sexuality studies, architecture and international relations. The journal Memoria y Civilización, published by the Department of History of the University of Navarra (Spain), is preparing an issue to be published in December 2015 on: Muslim Views of the West.
For several decades, historians and other social scientists have addressed the question of how the West had seen the future of the Islamic world, with its errors, distortions and stereotypes. This was evident again after the attack of 11-S in New York and, more recently, during the events arising from the so-called “Arab Spring”, especially in countries of North Africa and the Middle East. However, in this issue is intended to analyse the question of how an image of the West has been built over the centuries in the Muslim world with, probably, similar distortions and stereotypes. University of Chicago Shiʿi Studies Symposium: “The Practical Authority of the Imams and their Representatives”

Date of Symposium: April 3rd-4th, 2015

The theoretical authority of the Imam in Shiʿism has been addressed as a question of intellectual history by numerous articles and monographs over the course of the last century. Polemics over the nature of the Imamate provide rich sources for such questions, leading back to the very earliest years of Islam. However, it remains far more difficult to study the question of the practical efficacy of the Imam’s authority, and those who wielded it in his name. This symposium seeks to draw together research that addresses both the intellectual conceptualization of authority with the question of the practical authority of the Imam and his various representatives. We welcome contributions from scholars working from any relevant scholarly perspective, including social, intellectual and political history, anthropology, political science, literature, and religious studies. بیشتر بخوانید

Qisas al-Anbiya’: the Islamic Stories of the Prophets

Paper proposals are invited for a two-day conference commemorating the upcoming fiftieth anniversary of Tilman Nagel’s seminal work Die Qisas al-anbiya’: ein Beitrag zur arabischen Literaturgeschichte, the first comprehensive study of the literary genre of the stories of the prophets.
