Qisas al-Anbiya’: the Islamic Stories of the Prophets
Paper proposals are invited for a two-day conference commemorating the upcoming fiftieth anniversary of Tilman Nagel’s seminal work Die Qisas al-anbiya’: ein Beitrag zur arabischen Literaturgeschichte, the first comprehensive study of the literary genre of the stories of the prophets. The conference, which will be co-convened by Roberto Tottoli, Michael Pregill, and Marianna Klar, will be held at the University of Naples “L’Orientale”, in association with the Istituto per l’Oriente Carlo Alfonso Nallino, on 14 and 15 October 2015.
This conference aims to review the state of the field on qisas al-anbiya’ and closely related topics, and to provide a platform for the latest developments in this area, from literary, historical, and political approaches to analysis of semantics, discourse, and genre. Contributions can range in focus from evaluations of founding figures such as ‘Umara b. Wathima, al-Kisa’i, al-Tha‘labi, and al-Tarafi, to modern manifestations in a variety of traditional and non-traditional media. Particularly of interest are analyses of recently printed editions and unstudied manuscript fragments. Comparative and interdisciplinary studies that treat the subject of prophets in qisas al-anbiya’ and other genres of Islamic literature are also welcome. It is hoped that qisas al-anbiya’ in Persian, Arabic, Turkish, and the many other languages of the Islamicate world will be represented. Papers are also invited on the interaction of qisas al-anbiya’ material with other Islamic literary genres, with non-Islamic cultures, and within art and popular culture.
Abstracts of 350 words should be submitted to firstname.lastname@example.org by 12 January 2015.
