We seek to appoint an assistant professor in Classical Arabic Language and Literature. The appointment is expected to begin on or after July 1, 2016. Candidates are encouraged to apply by September 15, 2015. The appointee will teach and advise at the undergraduate and graduate levels. This is a tenure track position.
Doctorate or equivalent terminal degree in classical Arabic studies or related discipline, required by the time the appointment begins; mastery of classical Arabic required. The successful candidate will have research expertise in some particular aspect or aspects of classical Arabic language and literature in any period before 1500. The appointee will have a mastery of classical Arabic grammar, an ability to teach classical Arabic belles-lettres (including poetry), and an intimate knowledge of broader historical and cultural contexts. Ability to teach modern Arabic literature, although not required, is desirable. It is expected that the successful candidate will participate actively in both the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations and another appropriate program or department (e.g. Medieval Studies, Comparative Literature, History, Study of Religion, or Linguistics).
