The Department of Religious Studies at the University of Pittsburgh seeks to appoint a tenure-stream assistant professor of modern/contemporary Islam to begin September 1, 2015, pending budgetary approval. Geographical area and methodological approach are open. Teaching would include introductory courses on Islam (including premodern Islam) and upper-level courses in the candidate’s areas of expertise. We welcome candidates who can develop thematic and comparative courses in broader religious contexts, especially religion and globalization, politics/conflict, gender and sexuality, film, or medicine/science. Preference will be given to candidates whose work complements existing areas of geographic strength in the department or cognate departments, programs, and centers at the University. PhD expected at time of appointment. Applications should include a cover letter indicating teaching and research interests, CV, representative article-length writing sample, sample syllabi, and 3 letters of reference.
Please apply online to: https://facultysearch.as.pitt.edu/apply/index/OTA. For each reference, you will have the opportunity to input a personal email address or an email address generated through Interfolio’s Online Application Delivery. In both cases, an email notification will be sent to the designated address with instructions about uploading the letters to our system. Review of applications will begin on October 24, 2014 and continue until the position is filled. Applicants who respond by that date will be considered for an interview at the AAR meeting in November.
