The Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations at the University of Chicago invites applications for a tenure-track position as Assistant Professor specializing in modern Arabic literature (19th-21st centuries), preferably with expertise in another literature of the Islamic world, expected to begin in Autumn 2015.

The successful applicant will have a research and teaching profile with expertise in at least one, and preferably several, of the following sub-fields of literary studies: religion and literature; the modern novel; modern poetry; narrative prose and narratology, postcolonial theory; gender studies; and media studies. Candidates should have a thorough grounding in Arabic, preferably with additional expertise in another language of the Islamic world. The successful candidate will be expected to teach classes dealing with the modern literatures of the Muslim World for both graduate and undergraduate students. Applicants must hold the Ph.D. in Comparative literature, Near Eastern/Middle Eastern Studies, Islamic Studies, Religious Studies, Gender studies, Media studies, or a relevant field of study by the time of appointment.
