Doctoral research fellowships in Politics and Society in the Middle East at University of Oslo

Two PhD Research Fellowships in Politics and Society in the Middle East are available at the Department of Culture Studies and Oriental Languages, University of Oslo.

The persons appointed will be affiliated with the Faculty’s organized research training. The academic work is to result in a doctoral thesis that will be defended at the Faculty with a view to obtaining the degree of PhD. The successful candidates are expected to join the existing research milieu or network and contribute to its development. They will be linked to the research project The New Middle East – Emerging political and ideological trends (NewME) (see: http://www.hf.uio.no/ikos/english/research/projects/new-middle-east/index.html), and are expected to present a project relevant to the research agenda of NewME.

The appointment is for a period of three years and the doctoral thesis is expected to be completed within the given time frame.

Qualifications

A Master’s degree or equivalent in Middle East Studies or in a relevant discipline within humanities or social science, provided the topic of the Master thesis deals with an issue in Middle East society or politics. The Master’s Degree has to have been achieved by the time of application.

Qualifications and personal skills

In assessing the applications, special emphasis will be placed on:

The applicant’s estimated academic and personal ability  to complete the project within the time frame

The applicant’s ability to complete research training

Good collaboration skills and an ability to join interdisciplinary academic communities

The project’s scientific merit, research-related relevance and innovation

Mastery of Arabic, Persian, Turkish or Modern Hebrew language

Applicants who have recently graduated with excellent results may be given preference.
