Book Launch: THE BEAUTIFUL GAME ON A MUSLIM PITCH

October 2, 2025

United Kingdom

Join the Aga Khan University Institute for the Study of Muslim Civilisations (AKU-ISMC) for a Book Launch to celebrate the publication of The Beautiful Game on a Muslim Pitch: How Football and Religion are Shaping Identity and Society. The book’s two editors, Aaron W. Hughes and Leif Stenberg will discuss how football and religion are becoming increasingly interlinked in Muslim contexts. And also what role they will play in the fast-changing global landscape.

The first part of the book tackles how, in Muslim contexts, football and religion interact in the creation of an individual’s identity – whether as a player or as a fan. The second half of the book examines how those same elements are used by both political and religious establishments in their attempts to disseminate or propogate their larger messages.

The Beautiful Game on a Muslim Pitch has been published jointly by Edinburgh University Press and AKU-ISMC in the Exploring Muslim Contexts series. The ebooks are available for free, Open Access.
