Abstract:
\nColumbia University’s Department of Anthropology archaeologists made a reconnaissance for prehistoric sites during July and August 1968 in western Azarbaijan, an area that seems to be very promising for possible cave or rock shelter sites bearing Palaeolithic remains. In addition, the mission hoped to find an aceramic open site dating to the eve of plant and animal domestication, so that plans could be laid for a full-scale season of excavation. Despite an intensive search, none of the many archaeological sites found in the region fitted the requirements of the mission. There was, however, an abundance of later Neolithic sites, the reason why the objectives of the mission were not realized is still elusive.<\/p>\n
