\nThe\u00a0 20th\u00a0 century\u00a0 has\u00a0 been\u00a0 called\u00a0 the\u00a0 century\u00a0 of\u00a0 the\u00a0 gene, reaching\u00a0 a\u00a0 pinnacle\u00a0 moment\u00a0 at the beginning\u00a0 of\u00a0 the 21st century. This\u00a0 was on\u00a0 26 June 2000 when\u00a0 the\u00a0 US\u00a0 president Bill Clinton highlighted the\u00a0 successful\u00a0 completion\u00a0 of\u00a0 the first\u00a0 ever survey\u00a0 of\u00a0 the entire\u00a0 human\u00a0 genome, epitomized\u00a0 in the\u00a0 Human\u00a0 Genome\u00a0 Project.\u00a0 This\u00a0 breathtaking incident\u00a0 was\u00a0 compared\u00a0 to\u00a0 the \u201cmoonshot\u201d, equivalent to the meticulous planning through to the successful landing of humans on the moon and to the splitting of the atom. In contrast, some critical voices have cautioned against the unfounded\u00a0 or\u00a0 exaggerated\u00a0 genomic exceptionalism represented\u00a0 in a sometimes pervasive tendency to hype up the impact of genomics, especially with regards to healthcare. Both the rise of genomics as a research field and the intense debate surrounding its potential impact on healthcare have\u00a0 generated an unstoppable flow\u00a0 of\u00a0 deep\u00a0 and\u00a0 complex\u00a0 ethical\u00a0 questions,\u00a0 which\u00a0 we have incorporated\u00a0 here under\u00a0 the broad heading of\u00a0 the \u201cGenome\u00a0 Question\u201d, referred\u00a0 to\u00a0 henceforth\u00a0 as the GQ.
